Building Relationships and Building Bikes

0

Just got back from doing a bicycle team building event in New York with MasterCard. As a group MasterCard built 16 bikes. They donated 10 bikes to the boys and girls club of Yonkers and six bikes to the special services devision of White Plains.
One of the benefits of the event was focused on developing relationships in a new team. The MasterCard team having been formalized for less then six months and bridging members from three continents, was still getting to know each other. Something that is so common in todays market. Departments and groups are rapidly being reconfigured to keep up with rapidly changing market conditions. Building camaraderie, trust and rapport swiftly is key to getting into action quickly. And, even with seasoned professionals, a few gray hairs, ties and jackets, when a group is forming, it can transport us right back to the first day of school. There is some giddy anticipation and fear of the unknown. Questions and concerns come up like are “They” going to like me? Will I fit in here? Do we have the right people on the bus? What parts of me can I share and what parts are better to just check at the door? How am I going to navigate this new environment or culture? What do I have to know to get the grade? Do I like the leadership? With all this doubt, anxiety and anticipation, it is easy for a group to huncher down, get tasky and self protective, which can limit the creativity, innovation and vitality in the organization. MasterCard discovered that one way to break the ice is with humor, brainy play and a little bit of friendly competition.
Along with enjoyment and laugher, throughout the activity there ware many challenges the teams faced. Their individual skills, talents and even temperaments come out and it’s only through leveraging individual talents and then working together as a team that eventually makes building the bikes successful. The team completed the tasks, but it is because each individual contributed according to who they are, the strengths they posses, the talents they have, and the skills they have developed. The success of the team is built around bringing individuals together to synergize into an accomplished task.
Congratulations MasterCard on the successful bridging and development of your team and thank you for your generous contribution to your community.
